The War of 1812 Through Native Eyes

The 41st Regiment of Foot Military Living History Group was thrilled to present the first ever installment of the 41st Regiment Lecture Series!

This talk was a presentation on the role of the Native people in the War of 1812, particularly those who supported the British and Canadian side of the conflict.

Okwaho (Wolf) Thomas of the Mohawk Nation from the Six Nations Grand Territory (near Brantford, Ontario) shared with us the Native perspective of the conflict and their account of many significant events. Elements of this talk came from the oral tradition of the Six Nations and cannot be found in historical treatments of the War of 1812.

Okwaho presently holds the rank of Captain within the Crown Forces of Upper Canada for the British Native Allies. The British Native Allies are a group that helps to re-enact the War of 1812 and in so doing creates public awareness for the contributions, sacrifices and cultural aspects for the Native peoples during this time period.

The lecture was held at the Iron Duke House at the Wellington Brewery in Guelph, Ontario on Friday, April 22nd, 2005.

The 41st Regiment is grateful to the support of the Wellington Brewery and Wolf Thomas. Click to go to Wellington Brewery
