PrefaceThe history of the 41st Welch Regiment never having been published, I have written this book in the dual hope that it may remedy a distinct want, and also be of service to the regiment. The "Digest of Services," a manuscript work, has been for many years the only source of information respecting the regiment's history. I hope may be pardoned if I say that it is neither accurate nor complete. In writing this book I have depended largely on officers' personal reminiscences, as such are invariably interesting. The remainder of the text has been compiled from the most trustworthy sources. As the regiment has existed for nearly two hundred years, and this is the first attempt at writing its history, there must of necessity be several details which have been omitted owing to my misfortune in not having come across them. But, as far as I have been able, I have inserted everything which 1 deemed of importance, and have attempted at the same time to preserve an unbiassed tone in the narrative. Defeat has not been unduly excused-victory has not, I trust, been vulgarly exaggerated. In a work of this description it is extremely hard to satisfy the wants of all: many readers like a continuous and thrilling narrative with an almost entire absence of statistics: others prefer statistics and a systematic sequence of events. I have tried not to weary my readers with figures, and as no literary merit has been aspired to, the narrative may be considered sufficiently modest.
I trust this book will prove acceptable to those to whom it is dedicated. Should they be dissatisfied, I must ask credit for an honest endeavour to further the interests of a regiment to which they, like I, consider it an honour to belong. My best thanks are due to the officers of the 1st Welch Regiment for the generous manner in which they supported the production of this book. Its publication was paid for before a single word was printed. To Lady Gore- Browne, Lady Rowlands, Colonel Byam (R.M.L.I.), and Captain Lowry for the private letters and diaries which they placed at my disposal. To Mr. S. M. Milne of Calverley, Leeds, for the kindness he has shewn me, by not only writing two exhaustive chapters, but also by giving me the benefit of his knowledge on all subjects connected with regimental history. I could scarcely express in adequate terms the gratitude I feel to him. To Mr. P. W. Reynolds for the manner in which he painted the originals of the coloured plates, and to Messrs. Goodall and Suddick for the excellent way in which they have reproduced them. To Messrs. Heath and Co., for the trouble they have taken over the collotypes; and, lastly, to the publishers, Messrs. Hiorns and Miller. No firm could have been more courteous and obliging, nor could a greater interest have been taken by them. Throughout they did all in their power to overcome difficulty, and place at my disposal their former experience in this particular form of work. D. A. N.
